"Oh." Heather answered simply, tapping her feet together without any intention of doing so. Her lips were pursed once again, a habit of hers, while her mind was drifting off the VW Bug she'd been working on just before school started. She had to leave the rest of it to Travis, lucky Travis who got to do his schooling at home online so he could stay where he was. Heather shrugged, "True, I guess." She wasn't exactly wearing a shirt that was covered in car oil today, she'd forgotten. Those shirts were usually dead giveaways.
Heather laughed softly, probably for the first since she'd come to the school. "And what parts did you help with?" She asked, ignoring the comment about her being so into it. She couldn't wait to get her own car once she was 16. Her dad had promised to do exactly what he did for Tyler which was to buy an old car and Tyler had to fix it up for himself. She, of course, was looking forward to this delighted process. She wanted to work on a car and call it hers, she half smiled at the thought. The girl recoiled slightly, eyes widening a bit, at Nikki's tone, no wonder she understood Heather. She, or Tommy, must have had a rough past that led to adoption. She pursed her lips and kept her eyes down on her paper, starting to shade parts. She glanced up once at Tommy, frustrated she couldn't get his features right, before looking back down. She didn't want to be perceived as rude.

Nikki smiled. "They paint, the cleaning, and handing him tools." Tommy rolled his eyes. Nikki could find any tool he asked for. But did she want to learn what they did? No, of course not. If found it kind of ironic in a way. In other words, she could find the tools, but she couldn't use them to do any good. He noticed Heather recoil from Nikki's sharp tone, but continued to look down. Nikki's posture didn't loosen. Finally, Thomas decided he had to do something. And the opportunity presented itself. He noticed Heather looking at him closely, then looking away, seemingly dissatisfied. He quickly drew a conclusion. Whether it was right or wrong, didn't matter. He could still make a joke out of it.
He guess she was just trying to get his features right in the drawing. But in commented instead, "I know I'm exceedingly handsome - you don't have to be ashamed of staring." He smiled at Heather, brown eyes on her, brown eyes sparkling, letting her know he was teasing. Nikki's posture relaxed. Maybe someday she would tell Heather, but she'd only talked to the blond a couple of times. Not enough to warrant letting her in yet. Tom clipped his homework packet back into the binder and shoved it into his tan messenger bag. He ticked off his list mentally - math, bio chem, and history done. That left reading for English. Which he would naturally put off until the last minute. He hated English. Nikki always had to edit his papers for him, since he didn't care enough. Essays for college and such he could do just fine, but not things based on books, or imaginative.

Heather nodded, "Cool. You know more than most girls. The tools, atleast." Her eyes sparkled, no smile parted her lips though, that was just too much still for her. The blonde's lips pursed, annoyed slightly at the tone Nikki had taken with her, far from some previous concersations. She made a face mentally, deciding never to bring that up again, no one bothered to with her either. She may was well return the favor. She figured at some point she'd have to tell someone though, that would be hard. It seemed like a simple task, right? Just come out and say: My pregnant mother and little sister died a few days after my seventh birthday. My lfie changed then and I've become pretty anti-social. Okay, maybe not so simple.
Heather looked up at Tommy, expression confused at first before she smiled slightly. She actually blushed a tiny bit, just barely noticable. "Oh yes, you're definatlyt he most handsome creature." She rolled her eyes, sarcastic and slipping into her usual ways. Once again, she was getting along better with the boy than the girl. She loved being able to tease back and forth and use sarcasm with people, it was her favorite launguage. She watched as he finished yet another bit of homework and flipped her page, she could put the finishing touches on later. She liked the new sculpture of his face, so different from the usual. And so, with her new found interest, she started a new picture of him, keeping his old pose of looking over his school work. He looked so serene. She smiled to herself, her feet kicked up behind her, while her pencil moved easily across the page. She wouldn't have noticed if anyone was trying to talk to her until she looked up.

Tommy chuckled. "Glad you agree," he responded, matching her sarcastic tone. Nikki smiled, the sarcastic banter relaxing her. She lived in a house with her 'father and two brothers'. Besides her 'mom' she was the only female. So there were some things she'd picked up on, even if she didn't always employ them. Sarcasm was one of them. But one of the gentler traits as apologizing. She rolled on her side to face Heather, green eyes opened again. "Hey, I'm sorry, okay? Most people don't notice so fast, so you caught me way off guard." She smiled tentatively. "To answer the question more civilly: No, we are not blood-related. I'm an adopted Hartwell." Nikki didn't so much mind people knowing she was adopted when they figured it out. What she didn't like was what lead to the adoptions, even if she had pretty much come to terms with it. It was just...personal. Not to mention she had a huge aversion to fights and conflict. So, she tried to keep things smooth. Even if Tom had more a talent for smoothing things over than she did.
Nikki had waited until Heather had looked up to speak, knowing the that the girl - much like herself - probably got pretty absorbed when drawing. For her, she didn't pay attention to much when she was writing. Tommy smiled, brown-eyed gaze scanning the campus. At one point in time, Nikki would've left it at the snappish no. He remembered those days, though rather vaguely. He'd only been eight. He could feel Heather's gaze on him, and turned his head a fraction of an inch. "Am I really so intriguing?" he asked, teasing, but also curious. His lips were threatening to smile, but they weren't parted. Nikki stood up and walked over to Tom, off to the side of him, and reached up to the lowest tree branch. She easily pulled herself up onto it, expression passive. She liked the view better when she was higher. She almost wished she were as tall as Tom, but to banish the thought, she only had to think of how he hit his head on a lot of things.

Heather rolled her pretty blue-green eyes at his comment, half laughing and looking back to her work, intent on getting his features correct. Perhaps she could be a bit of a perfectionist when it came to drawing, she certainly wouldn't deny it. The blonde looked up, lips pressed together passively. "It's fine. I understand. I have touchy subjects too." Her voice was just tinted with emotion, she had a tendency to be that way, brush things off. She definatly noticed that she and Nikki must have somewhat similar of pasts. She almost grimaced, it would be different though. She pursed her lips, looking back down at her up close drawing of Tom.
"Drawing you, is extremely intriguing. Like I said, your features are something new to me. It's a challenge." She smiled softly up at him, tucking her hair behind her ear impatiently, bowing her head again to sketch in vague details. She smiled to herself and started humming some random tune that popped into her head. She looked up once at Nikki, "Better view?" She asked, semi-joking before she looked back to her paper. She propped her pad up, comparing it to the Tom sitting before her. She pursed her lips, keeping it propped up and making small corrections to his eyes. "Can you look up for a second?" She asked innocently, looking up from her paper.

Tommy smiled at the stress on the word 'drawing'. He made a face. "I'm not sure if being a challenge is a good thing or not," he said, tilting his head to look up at Nikki. Nikki beamed down at him, green eyes playful and affectionate. "If it was me saying it, it would most definitely not be a compliment. But it's not me." He looked back down, smiling just enough to park his lips. His brown eyes were amused. Nikki swung her feet, watching a girl across the campus pick up scattered pencils. She looked back when Heather addressed her, laughing for a moment. "You could say that. Different perspectives are always good." Well, except in books. It could drive her nuts when a book switched between perspectives sometimes. Especially if she liked one character best.
Tommy blanched, raising an eyebrow, then turning it into a teasing grin. "How far up?" he asked, tilting his head all the way back to tease her, making a face at Nikki while he was looking at her. Nikki scowled back at him, then looked away from her brother. Tom smiled and lowered his head again, but leaving it lifted more than before, gentle, amused smile lighting up his features. Nikki snickered, amused at him having to pose. Like a model. About as far from Thomas' character as one could get. He wasn't used to being looked at much, so his expression had become slightly less tranquil. Eyebrows pulled together, features comically bemused. The senior wasn't used to being in the spotlight - unless you counted academic skills.

"It's a good thing. I like challenges." Heather flashed a quick, white smile before she looked back, intently, to her pad. "I know what you mean." The blonde smiled up at Nikki, she liked to draw things from different views if she could, that is, before things moved. That often worked best with still life and not so much with her favorite subject: humans. The sophomore smiled to herself while humming to herself, singing the song in her head. She loved just drawing and being with other people. She wasn't huge into talking though, that was where she dropped off the social ladder.
Heather scowled at his teasing, impatiently and teasingly tapping her feet together while her face just looked bored with it. She was laughing inside. "I'm just comparing." She stated passively, pursing her lips and making a face at her drawing before fixing the minor issue. Heather sighed when he changed his face. "Do you have to make faces? It's rather unattractive." She sounded fully serious, though she was joking...somewhat. She sketched his current face on a different page before propping her pad up. "This, is awful compared to..." She dropped the page so he could see the other drawing. "This." She smiled idely, looking over the top of the pad before back up to him, blue-green eyes curious.

Nikki smiled down at Heather then looked back out over the campus. There were couples together, elites gossiping, nerds like her brother studying, athletes returning from various work-outs, etc. But everything seemed to happen at a slow, lazy pace, as everyone was enjoying the sunshine. No one wanted to be indoors. She pulled one leg up onto the branch, still managing to hold her balance, though it was making Tom mildly nervous. Nikki hadn't fall out of a tree before...but with her... well... Her foot was absently tapping to the beat of "It Happens" by Sugarland. She had it stuck in her head, and it was one of her favorite songs at the moment. It was such a good outlook on life...and just fun to rock out to when no one was watching.
Tommy raised an eyebrow at her. "You don't like the way I pose, don't draw me," he countered, brown eyes sparkling despite his annoyed expression. He let his smile through. Nikki had to catch her balance on the tree branch when she involuntarily started laughing at the quick sketch of Tom's face. "That's...so per...perfect." She was grinning, expression more alive than it had been all day. Tommy just laughed once, rolling his eyes. "Actually, I kind of like the first one," he said, for all appearances serious. "It is more natural," Nikki agreed, face lightly flushed from loosing her breath. Tom scowled at that comment, but obviously wasn't really annoyed.

Heather sighed, a little peeved now. "The point is that you aren't supposed to pose. I'm trying to see your features when you don't think about them. The way you were earlier and it was most certainly not making that face." She scowled at the drawing once more, erasing part of it only to sketch it again with what would look like no change to others. She had changed it, to her eye anyway. Heather was a perfectionist with her own work and, often, with others as well. It bothered her with school work and drawing and other things like that, but general appearance she could live with. Her clothing choice backed that up one hundred percent.
The blonde raised a single eyebrow at Nikki's laughing before looking to Tom. "You do. Of course you do." She scowled, tearing out the page and holding it out to him. "It's lazy work, you like, you can keep it." She stated simply. "It's not very natural. Natural is when one doesn't think about what their face is doing. That's what makes the drawing better than that sketch. He didn't know I was drawing him and was too deeply concentrated in his work to care about what he looked like." She spoke in one breath, not really thinking about what she was saying. It was her artist's eye taking over her mouth, speaking freely with her being merely a puppet. She pursed her lips, looking over the drawing and starting to play with the shadowing.

Tom leaned forward to grab the paper, studying with amused brown eyes. Nikki scoffed. "We should frame it. It can be your senior portrait." Tommy made a face. Nikki relaxed back against the tree while Tommy just studied the drawing before sliding it into his messenger bag. "I never care what I look like," he responded with a laugh. Nikki rolled her eyes. She carefully lowered herself from the tree, landing squarely on her feet, managing not to even totter. Tommy watched her with wary brown eyes. He was used to her falling over. He still remembered when she'd tripped, grabbed him, and they'd both fallen down. That day was one of his best memories. They'd been on the ground laughing for a solid five minutes.
Tommy idly wished for his guitar. It occurred to him that each of the three currently together had different, artistic talents. Nikki was the writer. The novel she'd been writing was nearly to a close, and he was trying to convince her to publish it. Heather could obviously draw. And work with cars. Which he also considered an art. He'd built his car nearly from scratch. He could also play the guitar fairly well. Though neither he or Nikki could sing worth anything. Nikki sat down at Thomas' side and he smiled at her, then looked back to Heather. "I'll have to show you my truck sometime..." he mused. She was probably the only one who would appreciate it. Nikki thought it was impressive, but didn't really get it.

"You would have to get it copyrighted for that." Heather teased, her voice, for all means, serious. She always joked about that with the guys at the shop. Her insides ached to be home, up late at night with her brother and dad. Outside camping in the woods with the guys and roasting marshmellows after a steak and potatoe dinner or fresh fish from the lake. The blonde sighed. She hated depressing herself like this, it was rather pathetic. "It's not a matter of caring. It's thinking." Heather stated simply, looking up at him with a small smile before looking back down intently on her drawing, lips pursed in thought.
The sophomore looked up. "Really? That's be tight. I can't wait until my sixteenth birthday. My dad's going to take me to the junk yard so I can build my own like Tyler did." She often talked too much when it came to cars. Her brother would probably help her a bit with her car the way she had with him when it came to heavy lifting that no one person could do. And he'd have to drive her out to the junk yard when she needed. She was looking forward to several fun weeks doing that. "Did you get your parts raw?" She asked, looking up from her drawing, one arm resting over the pad and holding the pencil, her expression curious and more open with the discussion of cars.

"I love having a car that I made...makes it something special." Thomas smiled easily. Nikki smiled slightly, turning her head to look at her brother, then to Heather. "He's gonna rebuild the engine of my car for me...once I get my license." She had an old truck too - it was her best friend. But it needed some work before it would run without her having to worry about it breaking down. For now it was back in D.C. Nikki just had to get her license. Then her parents would pay for the parts, and she'd help Tommy get it back in shape. Which was fun, actually. Tommy being covered in grease, including his hair, and her finding the tools and laughing at him. They had fun together no matter what they were doing.
"I had the car, but I completely redid most things. New windshields, new pain, rebuild the engine, new tires. Pretty much everything. Except that the frame is still the same." He smiled. His truck was orange, thanks to Nikki. Nikki's was going to be red. It made it easy to find them in parking lots at least... He met Heather's gaze with an open, friendly smile. He could see that this was the subject that loosened her up, and got her talking more. Relaxed her. Much like writing would relax Nikki. Most of the time. Going for a run would help her too, and just making small talk as they did so. If she'd had a bad day, Tommy knew all the solutions. He was absently making a note that talking about cars helped Heather. It was in his nature to make other people's days a touch brighter.

Heather smiled brightly and openly at Nikki. "Sweet." She turned to adress Tom, "And I completely get that." She gave him a small smile, looking to her paper, deciding it was done. She quckly signed her name at the bottom after adding a hint more of shading to his face. The drawing was a wide shot that included the tree and his body and books and it faded out on the edges, shaded out so that there was an inch or so of white around the edge. Her signature was sloppy, carefull crafted like everything she did. She pursed her lips, tearing it carefully out of her sketch pad.
"It's yours." She smiled, handing it over to Tom. She loved completing a picture, but she loved giving it to the person even more. She had yet to hand over Lacey's to her, she still didn't feel like the other girl would have any appreciation of it, but she figured Tom would so she willingly handed it over. "Cool. My dad has a couple of frames set aside for me. I can't decide between the Ford and Chevy pick up trucks. They're in dire need of new paint jobs and all. Basically, the frame is all that's staying. They need new brakes, oil tracks, engines, valves, everything. It'll be fun." She quirked a smile, she'd been looking down, smiling fondly at the thought. The other cars would also be fixed up to be sold. The blonde was definetly looking forward the many projects to come. "Anyways." Heather realized the slight silence, not that she didn't like it, but she got bored too easily sometimes.

Tommy smiled when she said she 'got it', leaning his head back against the tree and closing his warm brown eyes. He tilted his head back forward, running his hands through his short hair, then opened his eyes again. He blinked, taking a second to respond. And then it was a reflex. He reached for the drawing, taking it, and only really comprehending once it was in his hands. "Oh. Wait. No. I can't. Are you serious? I-" he stammered, eyebrows pulled together, perplexed. He smiled, listening to her talk, as he pulled out a binder and slid the drawing into one of the pockets. This one he would be even more careful with. He'd have to figure out something to do with it. Framing it seemed kind of odd...but he wasn't sure if it deserved anything less. He could put it in the front of one of his binders but...
"Nice. I like Fords, but that's me." He glanced at his watch, then looked across the campus. "You could probably stop by the autoshop where I work sometime...if you could prove yourself to them, they might even give you a job." He smiled. Even Nikki hung out at the autoshop sometimes. She didn't have a job there, but it was just a neat atmosphere. It wasn't a large shop - only two cars going at once maybe? But Nikki had taken a liking to coming back and sitting on the counter, talking to the other guys and drinking one of the Cokes in the glass bottles, while the country music station played. During the warm months the fan swept back and across the desk area - a cool spot on a hot day. There was a small inside area too, with lots and lots of tires. And popcorn. It was one of Nikki's favorite places.

Heather rolled her eyes, annoyed at yet another person stammering just from seeing her work and getting a piece of it. "I'm dead serious." She stated, voice bored with the ordeal before she started sketching again. The sketch was of nothing imparticular, just a scene from the shop. She smiled absent-mindedly while drawing it, her head bowed over her work. She included both trucks, she hoped at some point her dad might give in and let her fix up both anyways. She could always give one to him...or Tyler. Her dad's car was getting to be on its last leg now. She smiled fondly at the thought.
"I haven't decided yet...it'll be hard to eventually make a choice." She pursed her lips, then nodded to conferm her thoughts, it would be a tricky decision. Heather laughed, eyes sparkling madly. She thought that was rediculous. "That would be a bit...not right. I work for my dad's shop and my dad's shopt alone." She was serious by the time she got around to the second sentence, she wouldn't dare to work anywhere else. She loved the shop. The shop workers were her family: Tyler, her dad, Benny, Andy, etc. She loved all of them and they treated her like their own while also being protective of her. She wouldn't give that up fro anything, not even a cute guy telling her to swing by the autoshop where he worked. Heather's lips pursed as she smudged a part of the picture before starting to draw in Ty. "Am I boring you?" She wondered seeing as she'd been awfully quiet.
