I AM A HOSTAGE TO MY OWN HUMANITY, self detained and forced to live in this mess i've made Katie openly gaped at the sheet of paper the woman across the desk had just given her. A.... co-ed dorm? CO-ED?? Not to seem rude, but she couldn't live with... boys! They were so... boyish. She whimpered and began shuffling off in search of said dorm. Even though she didn't want to be roomed with them, it looked like she had to be, so it wasn't like she was going to make a scene. She would just grin and bear it. Even though, her grin was more like a pathetic wimpy smile and her confident stride was more of a slumping sloth's walk.
She put her head down and held her bag closer, or at least Jane Eyre closer. She wished she could be stronger like Jane Eyre, but she wasn't. But the least she could do was try. She raised her head again and straightened her shoulders. Think Jane Eyre, Katie. Jane Eyre. She exhaled and stopped when she reached the door. Instead of opening it however, she stood and stared at it. She studied every little crack and the doornob, the color, the shape, anything but to actually go in there. Finally, she sighed pathetically and turned the nob, half expecting a league of demons to come and attack her. Her eyes were screwed shut when she stepped in and closed the door behind her. Then she warily opened one, then the other. Well..... it wasn't bad so far. But that was probably because she hadn't met her roommates yet.
Her overobsessive mother had already sent her bags ahead of her, so she went into every room to investigate, since apparently no one was in there yet. Finally she found her room and screamed when she opened it. There was a big black block in the middle of the room and she didn't know what it was until she flipped on the lights. Then she started to giggle uncontrollably. It was only her bags. Okay, so half of them were books, but the other half were everything else she thought she needed. Like, I don't know, clothes and her stuffed animals.. that sort of thing.
She fell across the doorway to continue giggling like a madwoman, dropping her purse in the process. But after a while she decided if someone saw her like this she'd have a strange reputation at this school and stood back up, picking up her bag and putting it on her bed, then sitting on it herself. It wasn't bad. She could maybe live here.. maybe. She did a full scan of the room subconciously. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

Nikki sighed, walking up the pathway. Co-ed. Boys had never bugged her anymore than girls, so it didn't matter that much. She just didn't connect with people in general. She looked up at the building, pausing outside it. So this was to be her home this year. Last year she's been in a girls' dorm. Not that that had been particularly great or anything. At least not in the dorm. Nikki looked down at the dorm number again, then folded the paper and slid it into her pocket. She glanced around her, then headed up the stairs and opened the door, stepping into the hallways.
The sophomore walked slowly down the hall, watching the numbers get closer to hers. She was dressed in her faded blue jeans. They were scuffed and worn in places, but not in a bad way. It almost made them look designer, though they were far from it. Her shoes were Bearpaw slippers, a light beige in color, and they made no noise as she walked down the hallway. Nikki's top was a light, mind green cami, and it brought out her green eyes. Her brown hair was left down and in its naturally, loosely waving state. No jewelry adorned the girl, and only very, very light make-up enhanced her features.
Nikki tripped over her own feet, having to catch herself on a doorknob. Looking up, she found her number. She rolled her eyes at herself. Typical her - she couldn't just walk up to it like a normal person. She pushed her stuffed messenger bag back onto her shoulder and picked up her rolling suitcase, leaning it against her leg. Good thing everything breakable was in the bag on her shoulder. She fumbled with they key. Finally managing to get it from her pocket, she unlocked the door, locked it again, and shut it behind her. She stood near the door for a moment, trying to figure out which bedroom would be for the girls.
Nikki heard footsteps, and walked a few paces in order to look through the doors. Seeing another girl, she took a deep breath and walked towards the room. She lightly knocked on the door. "Hey...guess we're sharing?" She offered a tentative smile and walked further in, taking the side of the room that the other girl wasn't on. She dropped her messenger bag on the bed and then pulled her suitcase onto it as well. She pulled out her laptop, checking to be sure it was okay, then set it on the desk that was against one wall on her side of the room. The room seemed nice enough, with a bed for each of them, nightstand for each of them, a desk for each of them, etc.
{{Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure there are two to each of the bedrooms, according to the floor plan

I AM A HOSTAGE TO MY OWN HUMANITY, self detained and forced to live in this mess i've made Pulling her legs up indian-style on the bed, Katie wondered if she'd get in trouble if she jumped on it. It just felt like one of those beds that would be so much fun to jump on, hers at home was always too stiff or something. Anyway, it just was no fun at all to jump on. But before she could try, someone knocked on the door and walked in. She decided it might scare the other girl, so she would wait until she was alone. She smiled softly and kind of waved awkwardly a little, then dropped her hands back down in her lap. "Hey.." She said softly, turning to look at her. "I guess so.. I'm Kathari.. erm, I mean... Katie Cooper."
She picked her purse back up and hugged her book tight to her chest, quietly kicking off her shoes and dropping them off of the side of the bed. Gosh, this room was bigger than the one at home, and for a moment she wondered if it was going to be that bad with a boy roommate. It just depended on the boy, she decided finally, and left it at that. She stared at the bedspread and examined every noticable thread. She didn't want to annoy her roommate by staring at her, but she was more than curious. She tugged at the end of her ponytail and wished she had left it down, but didn't want to pull it out either. She chewed on her fingernail habitually, even though it was already stubby from when she'd chewed on it so many times before.
Wow, it was so quiet. Maybe her new roomie wouldn't be bad, and would be quiet so she could read in peace, something she couldn't do back home because her parents always wanted to talk. Was it a bad thing if she just wanted to read her books in quiet? Maybe she did read too much, but at least it was a hobby. Before she decided she liked reading, she just sat around and stared at cracks in the ceiling and other things, because she had always hated sports, and still does to this day, and for someone no one ever really talked to her anyway.
But that was another story.
Finally she remembered her bags, as she had been hugging her book staring at the bed for the past few seconds, and her head bounced back up, and tentativaly she stood up and started to bring them over to "her" dresser, opened one of the drawers, and clumbsily began just tossing her clothes in. Regularly, she wouldn't have even bothered, but she didn't want to seem like a slob on the first day. Maybe in about a week, but not now, she was just meeting everyone. When she got to her bag of books, she gently put it beside them and grabbed her stuffed animals out of smaller bag and placed them on her bed, cuddling each one out of habit for a moment before putting them down.
There wasn't very many of them, just four, but she couldn't have left home without them! She laid across the bed and rubbed her bare feet together, excited but a little bored already.
------------------------------------------------------------ NOTES; yeah, i think so =]

Nikki's lips twitched, pulling into a half smile when the girl agreed with an 'I guess so'. She walked to the desk to open her laptop, turning it on. It was a Macbook. And it was one of her best inanimate friends. She then started taking out her clothes, putting the jeans, shorts, tee shirts, camis, tank tops and sweatshirts into her dresser. None of the clothes were designer, none were dressy. They were all pretty much made for comfort. And, in a couple cases, athletics. Only running. At any other sport, she failed miserably. She had a pair of boots,a pair of tennis shoes, a pair of converse, and a pair of flip flops as well. She left her hairbrush, toothbrush, etc in the suitcase, and pushed the suitcase under the bed. The shoes she lined against the wall.
With that, Nikki turned to the messenger bag. She glanced up at Katie with a half smile. "I'm Nikki," she responded. She noticed the book the girl had been holding. "You like to read?" She pulled her iPod out of her bag, her camera, and then the four or so books she'd managed to bring with her. They were tattered copies of Twilight, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and Breaking Dawn. She had so many more books at home...but she hadn't been able to fit them all. She tucked her hair behind her ear, an absent-minded gesture, and she put the messenger bag off to the side. It still had her binders and such in it for school, and it leaned against the leg of the desk now.

Katie was silent, she didn't know what to do or say, and in saying so, was holding her book again, staring at the cover. She looked up when the girl replied and introduced herself. Nikki was a nice name, it sounded adventurous and a nice name for a character, in her own personal opinion. But that was another matter. She sat up straighter when Nikki asked her if she liked to read, and started laughing softly. "I think that's probably the understatement of the century." She said, ducking her head and putting her book back on her bed.
It was true, though. That was practically all the girl would do. Homework, sleep, eat, reading.. you'd be lucky if you caught her without a book, if there was ever such a time. "And you do, too?" She asked, watching Nikki pull out a few books of her own. She didn't think she could survive if at least one of her roomies didn't read, too. She'd feel even nerdier than she already did, and her opinion of herself already was low enough as it was. The lips of Katie's mouth curved upward into a small smile and she relaxed on her bed, thinking of her bag of books and all of the lonely books she'd left back home and promised herself she'd switch them every holiday break.

Nikki laughed for a moment. "Oh really?" she asked, raising an eyebrow, amused. So the girl liked to read. She did too, but she was more into writing. Of course, inspiration came from reading a lot of the time. She stacked the four books and put them on a shelf on her dresser, since her clothes didn't fill all of it, spines out. She'd have to make a trip to the library soon. She needed some new books. Or maybe she could find a good used book store... "I'm more of a writer, but I do love to read," Nikki replied to the question, turning from the dresser to look at Katie. Her expression was friendly, but it wasn't completely open. It never was when she was just meeting someone.
Nikki sat down on the bed, and pulled her laptop to her. She checked her email, MySpace, and brought up iTunes to see if she'd bought this one CD yet..she hadn't. So an iTunes card would be in order too, eventually. She closed to the laptop, putting it into its sleep mode. She looked up at Katie feeling impulsive for once. "Hey. You wanna go out? There's this great cafe with smoothies..." She raised an eyebrow. She realized she didn't know if the girl was new or not - she might already know about one of Nikki's favorite hangouts. She idly played with her hands, then slid off the bed to find her key. She couldn't just sit here and do nothing. It wasn't even dark outside yet. She'd go back to her favorite haunt with or without Katie.

Katie smiled as she listened to Nikki continue speaking. "Oh! Well, that's cool." She said, thinking about her own attempts at writing. When Nikki turned back around to face her, her smile widened a little bit, trying not to seem unfriendly. She quietly watched as the other girl brought out her laptop and began typing. Katie herself had a laptop, but she never really got on it except for iTunes. She was never a big "technology" kind of person, except for few TV shows and movies that had been made out of movies, and her ipod. But other than that, she was pretty much technology-lost.
She was staring blankly at the back of the laptop screen when her roommate spoke again, and her head shot up, her eyes a bit like a frightened rabbit. She hadn't been expecting her to say anything else, so it had just surprised her. "Oh!" She said once more "Sure! I love smoothies.." She smiled again. It wasn't like she was going to be doing anything, and it would give her a chance to get to know her roomie a little better. It was worth a shot, anyway.
