hold your breath til we cross the sundown,
THIS IS THE MOMENT, TIME IS RACING, SLOW IT DOWN. Carson walked through the downtown park. It was brisk, and an almost pleasant aroma filled the air. He could smell the trees, and feel the thick polination swirling in the air around him, before landing on a poor unsuspecting car, and making the owner quite angry. He smiled, and felt a late soft breeze dance through the air, just as dusk began to break. Not dark, and yet, the sun did not meet the horizan, as it slowly faded into the ever burning out sky, becoming darker, and eterminating its light, like a campfire, being extinguised. It was twilight.
He closed his eyes, and stood beside a tree, as the leaves that were on the ground piked up, and made a tiny tornado around him, then slowly, and sadly died away.
He sighed, and looked around, finding no one insight. Not that he really had expected there to be. No, he was a people person, sure, but it was Friday night. Well, afternoon, anyhow... And he was alone. Bored, and alone. He'd gotten up that morning not knowing a bit in the world what he was going to do...
His mussed hair, stood out in all directions, and he had a song stuck in his head. He probably looked rather glazed over, and crazy. He had on a white dress shirt, and dark wash jeans on. His old favourite pair of black converses were worn, and comfortable, as he pounded the pavement, not wanting to run up the costly expense of using his vehicle and clogging the eco-system even more. Besides it was a nice day out. What would be the point in riding in the car? Not that it wasn't a nice vehicle..
He strolled, and the wind kept blowing, still mussing his hair, although it was mostly out of porportion already, and he didn't really car. He shoved his hands into his pockets, and looked down at his shoes, finding them most engrossing...Well, it wasn't like there was anything else to look at....Anyhow, he seemed to be lost in thought about pretty much nothing, when all of a sudden, he found himself bumping into a person.

Nikki stepped out of the book shop. She had one book in hand. It was a used copy of The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen. She absently pulled her brown, zipped sweatshirt tighter even though it didn't need it. It wasn't hardly cool out even. She closed her eyes reveling in the warm, gentle breeze. With opened her warm brown eyes again, and started walking back towards the school campus. The light was fading, but it didn't concern her. Much. She picked up her pace just slightly. She followed the familiar path back to school. She'd been here since freshman year, and therefore knew her way around.
Nikki was wearing dark blue jeans that had a gentle flare at the bottom. They weren't her favorite pair of worn, comfortable, faded jeans - they were her newest pair. But she had to break them in sometime, right? Her top was a white cami, but it was mostly covered by her brown sweatshirt, zipped up to the point where only a small piece of the cami showed. Her shoes were white, rubber flip-flops. They were rather easy to trip on... Nikki's naturally loosely wavy brown hair was left that way. She never straightened it, but she did put it up sometimes. She was wearing no jewelry, and only natural, light make-up.
Nikki had always been a bit of a klutz. Which was why she felt herself run into someone, it didn't surprise her. She still squeaked, holding up her hands slightly in defense. This, of course, sent the book clattering to the ground. "Oh crap, I'm sorry," she said, looking up to the face for the first time. She'd seen the guy on campus, but they ran in different circles for the most part. She bent down to pick up her book. "Sorry again," she said when she straightened. She nodded, smiling through pursed lips at her own awkwardness, and started to take a step around the other teen.

Carson tried to mutter a reply, but the words didn't want to seem to leave his mouth. All he could get out was "So," gulp "orry!." And clamor to help the girl up. Her book had clattered to the ground, and a small noise erupted from it hitting the pavement, and almost bouncing. He bent, picked it up, and then offered her a hand. Then, he seemed to regain his words. "So sorry. I really should've been watching where I was going." he muttered out before blushing, once she'd made it to her feet. "I was just....off in space, as usual." He laughed, and then ran a stray hand through his very much mussed hair. He now, wished that it would stay in place.
He took the girl in. She was small, petite, to be more exact, with large brown orbs for eyes, that seemed to kind of...look into your soul. God, why was he thinking like that? He didn't even know the girl's name, for crying out loud! She wasn't, atleast, dressed as one of those overly entusiastic and bitchy preps , atleast. Nor, was she wearing an abundance of pink. God, why had he ever made pink? To annoy Carson, probably. It was just....so feminine, and strange when a girl loved everything pink. Well, an older girl. He had a neice, whom was absolutely adorable, and she always had lopsided pink ribbons in her pigtails. And it was, indeed, superbly cute. He shook his head of his thoughts, having again, been succumb by his thoughts, and not paying any attention. "Are you new here?" he asked, almost hopeful. He hadn't met any others that were fairly new there at the academy...He noticed she was watching his hands, and then he looked down, puzzled at first. "OH!" he said, and then laughed again. "Sorry, you must think I'm some kind of lunatic, trying to make off with your reading material." he laughed, and saw the corners of her mouth tug up into a grin, as he handed her back the book. He held onto it, though, being lost in the change of her eyes. From apathetic, to smiling. He looked down, and let go of the book, not feeling awkward, but slightly embarrased. She was going to think he was some creepy stalker, wannabe player....
"Is it just me," he began, smiling again, "Or do I seem to be saying sorry in this conversation, an over abundance?" he asked, then rolled his eyes, and grinned. "I'm Carson, by the way." he added, "Carson Hayes. I'm rather new...here." he said, his crooked grin, still plastered across his face, as he held out his hand, to shake hers.

Nikki was by this time a bright red. One would think she'd be used to doing stupid things by now, but not so much apparently. She straightened slowly, lips parted, showing her insecurity. It was her typical 'I'm out of my comfort zone' expression. "Um, no, it's fine." She stammered to assure the boy no harm was done. The blush had been fading, but it flared again. She hated the idea of someone else taking the blame. "Seriously. No harm done." She half smiled for only a second, but hoping it was enough to reassure him. She looked down, playing with her hands, feeling the boy's gaze on her. He was obviously older. A couple years. And from what she'd seen, decent looking. No, really, really good looking. But it didn't matter. She didn't want any relationship crap going on. It wasn't worth it.
Nikki glanced at the book, too quiet and timid of a person to ask if he intended on giving it back. But of course, she didn't care to leave without it either. She bit her lip, trying to decide what to do. Until he offered it. "Thanks," she said with a soft, embarrassed laugh. She reached out to take the book. "And no, I, uh, I went to school here last year too." She had to look at his face, trying to make-out what he was thinking when he didn't relinquish the book instantly. She smiled awkwardly, but it was still enough to add sparkle to her brown eyes, which before had be bemused, and guarded. They still were guarded though - she was never open with people she just met.
The sophomore took the book when he let go of it completely, studying the cover instead of having to look up at her new acquaintance. She looked up when he introduced himself. "Oh. Nikki. Nikki Hartwell," she responded, shifting the book to her left hand and putting her right one tentatively in Carson's. It took a while to win over Nikki's trust, she'd had it so violated when she was young. She risked a glance up at him, and sucked in a startled breath through her lips. That smile. She had to practically jerk her gaze away it was so stunning. No, no, Nikki. You know what boys do. They aren't good for anything beyond friendship. Even that....

Carson's smile, sweet, crooked, and sometimes thought to be quite adorable, didn't even budge. Nor, did it even appear to try to fade. "So...you know your way around this place pretty well, or is it always confusing?" he asked, nodding his head to his left, to the street, where cars whizzed past, and people were going on with their busy lives, not even noticing to people on the street.
And that, Carson thought, was definitely not how he intended to ever get. He wanted to be a person that could actually stop and smell the flowers. Not someone that was always so engrossed in work, and too busy to have a life. Just because you lived til one hundred two,did not mean that you had actually lived. And he hated the way people were always rushing around. He just wanted it all to slow down, and take a moment. A breath. Have a little fun. Let himself come undone, just sometimes. Maybe thats why he'd decided to just get up and go walking that morning. But he'd had a feeling something good was going to happen this morning, he just hadn't had a clue what it could be...
"And where were you headed in such a rush?" he asked, grinning down at her again, noting she was substantially shorter than he. But she was...absolutely enthralling...

Nikki half smiled, slightly crooked. "I know my way around," she affirmed, glancing down, then back to Carson's face. She dropped her gaze again and looked to the street. Cars whizzed past. When they were close enough, they created enough breeze to play with a few looser strands of brown hair that weren't so close to the rest. She blinked at his question, trying to remember what her rush had been. Her eyebrows pulled together just slightly as she thought. Oh, right. "I was just heading back to the dorms," she replied, green-eyed (whoops, I forgot what her eye color was before, I'm an idiot now and then lol) gaze downcast.
"It was getting dark," she added in attempt to explain her hurry. She looked up to him, annoyed with the height difference. She wasn't short, but he was tall. She was biting her lower lip, though it wasn't really noticeable, as they were pursed. "So..." she started, having to get her courage up. "You said you were new." Nikki looked to his face for affirmation. "Where from?" she asked. She couldn't decide where she wanted to look. Half of her was dying to keep staring at Carson. The other half was demanding that she look away, both from a logical view, and from a shyness issue. She didn't like to be one to initiate things when just meeting someone...she didn't usually like to respond either. But she was rather caught here. And Carson didn't seem too bad...

Carson smiled, and thought about that for a moment. He'd come from england, moving here, when he was four, though, he never started out by telling that. People seemed, always, to be puzzled about why he and his family had left. Because everyone seemed to love it there, or really want to go there. But they had left. He was, from new jersey, where he'd recently transferred from there to here. He wasn't sure if he should go ahead and tell her about England, and get that weird look, as usual...Although, she didn't seem like that. She seemed rather sweet. Ugh. He wanted to shake his head. Girls weren't something that he usually got into. He stayed away from any that might want to be more than just friends...
He always had been engrossing to them, and they'd always fallen for his charm, which, in all reality, was just Carson's personality. Oh, and his slight accent...And something, every single one of them had said was something about his smile, and his whole...look in general.
He hated hurting them. Because, truly, all he thought of them were friends. And he didn't like hurting them one bit. He hated the way he always had to tell them, when they'd get all excited, and ask him to a dance, or out in general, because they thought that they could be more than friends...And now, standing here, Carson realized, that he was quite intrigued by this girl standing infront of him. He'd always been quite good at reading people, but today, he just couldn't read her for some reason. And it frustrated him, and he wondered if he were allowed to spend more time with her, if he'd ever be able to figure her out...He was indeed, already hoping in spending more time with her...
"I originated from England." he replied, finally, trying to clear his heads of thoughts of desires to see her again. "But we moved here when I was four." he looked down, and then added, "New Jersey, is where I recently transferred from..." he said, grinning, wondering what kind of questions she'd ask now...And then, he had a thought.
"Erm, well, would you be so kind as to tell me where a nice place to eat is around here. I really don't know anything around here...I don't even know what street I'm on." he shrugged, smiling crookedly, his hands shoved in his pockets, as he did so..."Maybe...be so kind, if it's not too ask," he said, running his mussed hair and blushed. He wasn't really asking her this...After ten minutes of talking to her, was he?
Well...he didn't know his way around, and he needed a sort of guide...He tried to convince himself...Although, it didn't help that she was cute too.
"Maybe, um...go with me? I really am a bit lost." he laughed. "I know most guys are supposed to be too macho to admit that, or whatnot, but...I am not proud." he said, chuckling lightly...

An eyebrow raised. England. Whoa. That was more exciting that anywhere she could ever say. If she'd been with friends, her expression would have become annoyed at being outdone. But she'd only talked to Carson for what? Ten minutes? So her expression remained smooth, except for the mild surprise. She listened to the rest of the basic facts. "England. Wow," she said with a brief, amused smile. She looked up to meet his gaze for a minute, then back down. She didn't ask any other questions. She was never, ever one to pry. It took too much courage to ask questions. Exhausting, would be a good way to put it. Her expression became wary at once when he started mentioning restaurants. The word date flashed into her mind.
The idea of date made her freeze up, instantly one edge. She'd started to relax just slightly, until he started to ask something else. "I can show you a good place and how to get there, but I-" Normally, this would be where Nikki would insert an excuse. A way out of it. She was good at it - it wasn't like boys hadn't been interested in the past. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. "Okay," she agreed, just loud enough for him to hear. Her eyes slowly flickered open. Her expression was careful, wary, but she was agreeing to this. After all, she hadn't eaten yet. "C'mon," she muttered with a fleeting smile, turning to walk towards downtown, posture still a little tense. Everything she'd ever learned screamed in protest against this madness, but she kept walking. "You like Italian?" she asked. She didn't look up to see Carson, keeping her eyes stubbornly on her feet. But she could sense him at her side.

He noticed her hesitation, at his question. And this, most definitely, was not something that he would ask someone, usually, when he'd just met them. But, it wasn't an actual...date. He hadn't just asked some random stranger out...Well...he didn't think he had. And he hadn't meant to come on too strong, and abrasive, with such a question. He wished, now, that he'd reworded it...But was happy, at the turn out. She had accepted his invitation...To accompany him. Which would be nice, considering he would've been sitting alone...Atleast now he'd have someone to make conversation with, and a pretty face to look at. If he could ever get his nerve up to look at her. It just made him want to blush, though, and it'd look like he already had a crush on her. Which, assuming his thoughts were aligned, her rather did. But he certainly rather not tell her that, nor let her know of it.
He almost laughed at her questioning about Italian...But, rather, waited, and chuckled at his own. "I'm a boy...I eat anything... Well, exept mutton. Thats just wrong." he rolled his eyes at himself. "Okay, so I don't eat everything, I'm almost vegan, but not quite. And to answer your question, instead of being all confusing, yes, I do like Italian." he nodded, and looked down at his shoes. "There was a place up in Jersey I used to be a regular at." he smiled,at the thought. Italian, actually, was his favourite of types of food. And he also loved lo mein, when it came to chinese food. He had eaten three cartons one night when he'd sat up and watched an all night dracula marathon...Accompanied by edger allan poe books that'd been made into movies, such as 'the raven' , 'the rise and fall of the house of usher' , 'the tell-tale heart', and a few others...
"So, tell me what there is to do around here? What occupies your time?" he asked, looking around, taking in the scenery, and then looking back down at his shoes again.

Nikki rolled her eyes halfway at his response. "Doesn't mean to like everything you eat," she pointed out, risking a glance at him. Which of course, let her trip over a slight lip in the sidewalk. She caught her balance quickly though, light blush coloring her face. Her last comment had probably been the first one that actually showed she was letting Carson in. Just a little. She'd countered something he'd said - responded when she didn't need to. She nodded when he confirmed that he did like Italian. She ran through what he'd said. "Vegan almost?" she asked, looking up to him with a raised eyebrow, before looking down to her feet, remembering what had happened last time she looked up. A klutz like her needed to pay attention to where she was going.
Nikki walked up the stairs to the door of a small, but slightly elegant Italian restaurant. She stepped into the building and absently told the hostess 'two'. She tried to remain detached from the fact of it being just the two of them, and what that would look like, or else she'd end up pulling herself from the situation. She took her seat after pulled her brown sweatshirt off, putting it over the back of her chair. She set the book down on the side of the table. She smiled tentatively at Carson. "As to a previous question, I'm not really one to ask about what there is to do. Ask one of the elite. I tend to be a more reading, writing, homework, movie kinda girl." She laughed softly for a moment, looking down. Her green-eyed gaze flickered up when the waiter appeared.

"Touche, mon bell." he said, grinning at her, with his usual crooked grin. "But I'm not sure most boys even truly taste the things they pour down into their gullets." he laughed.
He grimaced slightly at her remark about the elite. The irony of it all. "I, actually..." he began, "Was thrust into that clique." he smiled. "Not that I really stay to my assigned cliques." he shrugged. It wasn't like he really wanted to be in the 'elites' he didn't really feel all that elite. And he hated people that thought that they were better than everyone else. He had just been put into the wrong group. It was simple, and absolutely a reasonable assumption. His boyish goodlook, and his charm, along with his money, just sort of threw him in there among snobbery, and other unattractive people. He hated that. Being shoved into something he wasn't. It wasn't who he was at all...
He smiled at her, as they walked to into the place, and held up two fingers at the hostess, also flashing her a smile. He walked around the other side of the table, and pulled her chair out for her, as she took off her sweater. It wasn't just because he liked her...Which, he guessed he might after a while...But it was just...polite. And really, how he'd been raised. When she sat down, he pushed her up, and then walked swiftly back to the other side of the table. He picked up his menu, and didn't say another word... He didn't want to comment on that last thing. Why had he done that? She'd probably think he was insane, and already think he thought this was a date. It wasn't...

Nikki smiled, half-laughing, at his comment on 'most boys'. She didn't say anything back, but they smile remained on her face for a few more moments. She raised an eyebrow at him, dubious. "The elites. Really?" She grimaced. She'd never really had a run in with the elites, but they weren't particularly friendly, that was for sure. She was surprised by Carson pulled out her chair, and then pushing it gently in as well. It made a blush dust her face, but she opened her menu. Contrary to Carson, she left it flat on the table, just tilting her face downwards. Her brown hair fell gently over her shoulders, framing her face. It wasn't neatly tucked behind her ears anymore.
Nikki looked up, saying she just wanted water, with an easy smile for the waitress. It was so easy to smile at people who helped you that you didn't really know, and didn't intend on knowing. Once the waitress came back with their drinks, she ordered her dinner - cheese ravioli. Once the waitress left, she looked to Carson, finding it exceedingly hard to not look at him now. At it would look awkward. "So...you like Italian food, you're from England, or New Jersey, and you got pulled into the elite clique. What else do I need to know?" she asked with a small smile, just enough to part her lips. She reached for her glass carefully, taking a sip, and setting it down just as carefully. It would be just like her to knock it over.

When the waitress came around, he ordered Sprite. He then, when she came back ordered the chicken catchetori.Then, fiddled with his straw, rolling it into a tiny ball,and then playfully flicking it in her direction, raising one eyebrow, questioning her next move.
He smiled when she began the chatter again. "right to the point, no playing around. I like that." He said, trying not to laugh."Well...I absolutely love reading. And I also write poetry a lot." he admitted. "Your turn..." he said, stirring his sprite, not that it actually needed it. "Where are you from? Whats your favourite food...or quite possibly the clique you've been placed into." he shrugged, and leaned back a little bit in his chair, relaxing. "Its your turn to 'fess up, Miss Hart." he laughed, and looked around. He took a sip of his Sprite, and raised one eyebrow again, still not breaking eye contact with her, til she'd looked down...
"Do you write...any? Poetry, music, stories?" he asked, wondering aloud. "Oh, and heres another thing. I like photog too." he said. And then nodded his head, to himself, really. Not to anyone in general. "And now you know." he finished, then undecidedly added. "Sorry I'm interrupting you. I really do want to hear what you're interested in. Proceed, and I promise not to butt in one more time." he finally finished. His eyes sparkled at her, glinting and hinting at his personality, just a bit. His smile was crooked, and sweet. And all of his attention was aimed at her.

Nikki blushed when he said he liked that. Right to the point...well, since she didn't like to talk all the much without her friends, she supposed it would make sense for her to be right to the point. She listened to his voice, watching his expression and meeting his gaze with an interested, but mostly unreadable expression. She looked down, taking a shaky breath in when he proclaimed it her turn. "Well...I'm...I'm from Boston I guess. It's really complicated." She looked everywhere but at him. She didn't want her past to come out yet. She always tried to prevent it from ever coming out. "But my family lives in Washington DC now." She dared a look up at him, expression antsy, flighty, nervous. She didn't like discussion about anything that hinted at her past, even in the smallest way.
Nikki found him looking at her, and it became impossible for her to look away. "I-" she started to answer, but willingly let him interrupt. She smiled a small smile. Photography. She loved taking pictures with her friends, but she didn't like photography per say. "It's fine," she said hastily when he apologized for interrupting. "I do write. I've..." she bit her lower lip for a second, "been working on a novel for, half a year or so now..." She shrugged, passing it off as nothing. "I eat books, or so my parents tell me. Um," she paused again, thinking back to the other questions. "My favorite food by far are smoothies." She turned a light pink as she remembered meeting Liam, and how she'd knocked over her smoothie. "I am not a one clique person. I've been classified as sweetheart, writer, and normal."
Nikki lifted her green-eyed gaze, locking it with his. "Is that all you asked?" She was trying to make sure she hadn't missed anything. "If you're ever trying to get in contract with me, my phone is the worst bet. I always forget to turn it on," she added, without prompting, laughing for a moment. She bit her lip, trying to stop herself, but had to say it. "And I should warn you: I am a terrible klutz." She smiled, almost fully at him, laughing for a moment. She figured he ought to be warned if he was going to be around her at all. It put him at risk in terms of things getting spilled, her falling into him, etc. Her friends were forever teasing her. And it whenever she did something truly embarrassing, she'd tell them first thing, since they all got amusement out of it.

THIS IS THE MOMENT, TIME IS RACING, SLOW IT DOWN.
He laughed a bit. Smoothies...He wasn't sure if that was an actual food. Maybe. But he wasn't exactly sure. He looked up, jsut as the waiter brought the food out. The plates were steaming, and the aroma was quite enticing. His mouth almost began to water, but he was afraid he might look stupider than usual if he even licked his lips. Instead, he took a drink of his Sprite, and waited for the waiter to clear herself away. "Finished one already?" he asked, taking a fork out of the utensils that had been rolled in a large dinner napkin, with a napkin hold slid over the middle of it, to keep them all in place. "I have a whole album, sort, I guess you could call it, full of poetry, and songs." he admitted. Why was he telling her this? He hadn't even told his best friends that back in Jersey. He wanted to stop himself. He needed to. He could feel him starting to like her already...And he never felt this close to a person. Able to...be okay, and in his comfortable around a person. He always felt a little bit on edge...Around his parents, his friends, even the girls he used to attempt to like. Attempt to be around and date...
Date...he hadn't even looked at a girl in that way since he'd moved from Jersey. All the girls here were exactly like the ones he'd seen there. They were interested. Just not interesting enough. He had to click with you. Or it just didn't work. It wouldn't be enough just to be friends. He had to actually like you. He hated trying to force himself to like his bestfriend, just so he wouldn't loose another bestfriend. He mostly, did get along with girls a bit better. Most thought that made him a player, or a whore. But it was just Carson. He never meant to hurt anyone,or lead them on...
He chuckled at her klutz comment. "I'm a bit of klutz, myself." he admitted. "And my phone is usually on silent." he added. "I really don't use it to do anything except text every once and a while..." he paused, shoved a forkful of pasta in his mouth,wiped his mouth off with his napkin, and took a gulp of his drink, before adding, "So I guess we do have a bit in common..."
"Oh! And my cliques that I've been shoved into are the elites, and the sweethearts." he nodded. "I really hate the way they classify us. Like we're livestock, or brand of meat." he said, rolling his eyes.
"Maybe I should take you to the library, next time you get hungry..." he joked, raising an eyebrow at her, letting her know, with his eyes, that he was just poking fun at her.
